Dr. Keith Skubitz

Dr. Keith Skubitz discusses his research involving uterine fibroids. Dr. Skubitz is the lead author of two of the 20 most-cited papers on uterine fibroids over the past two years: "Differential gene expression in uterine leiomyoma" (Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine 141: 297-308, 2003), and "Differential gene expression in leiomyosarcoma" (Cancer 98: 1029-38, 2003). Dr. Skubitz is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Transplantation at the University of Minnesota Medical School.

Dr. Gaylene Pron discusses her two highly cited papers on uterine fibroid embolization (also called uterine artery embolization or UAE) and the status of treatment of uterine fibroids. A recent analysis of uterine fibroid research shows that Dr. Pron had the most-cited paper in this field over the past two years, with 20 citations to date (Pron G., et al., "The Ontario Uterine Fibroid Embolization Trial. Part 2. Uterine fibroid reduction and symptom relief after uterine artery embolization for fibroids." Fertility and Sterility 79[1]:120-127, 2003). Dr. Pron is a clinical epidemiologist in the department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Bruce McLucas

A recent analysis of the ISI Essential Science Indicators Web product for the last 10 years shows that Dr. Bruce McLucas ranks at #12 among the top 20 scientists publishing on uterine fibroids, with 19 papers cited a total of 392 times. Dr. McLucas is one of the first physicians to use uterine artery embolization as a treatment for uterine fibroids. Via catheterization of the common femoral artery, the procedure inserts microspheres to block blood flow from the uterine arteries into the myometrium, the muscular layer of the uterus from which uterine fibroids grow. He discusses this procedure and his highly cited papers in this field with Special Topics correspondent Myrna Watanabe.
