Why
do you think your paper is highly cited?
The resource-based "view" (RBV) —a
perspective wherein a firm's internal resources are considered to be
key to its competitive advantage—has
achieved wide acceptance in the strategic management literature over
the past 10 years. Many scholars have labeled the RBV a theory, but
there has been little critical evaluation of the RBV as a theoretical
system. My paper, co-authored with John Butler of the Hong Kong
Polytechnic University, identifies current shortcomings in this
popular view and suggests directions for the future.
Does
it describe a new discovery or new methodology that's useful to
others?
Our paper identifies conceptual challenges that must be addressed
if the RBV is to move toward theory status. These include:
rigorously formalizing the RBV as a theoretical system,
incorporating a temporal component, addressing how causal
relationships occur in the system, and integrating the RBV with
demand heterogeneity models.
What
were some of the circumstances that led you to do this research?
John and I had some free time in 1998, near the end of one-year
visiting posts at the
Hong Kong University of Science & Technology. The RBV had
become quite popular by then, although I had long felt that there
were logical gaps in the original perspective and subsequent work. I
suppose the circumstance was a fortunate incidence of people and
ideas meeting opportunity.
Could
you summarize the significance of your paper in layman's terms?
Our paper examines whether the resource-based "view" of
strategic management currently has the power of a theory —i.e.,
to explain and predict phenomena—or if instead its assertions are
correct only by coincidence or definition. This type of critical
examination is necessary to clarify and improve aspiring theories, so
they may be rigorously tested.
