ST:  Why do you think your paper is highly cited?

The paper describes a method for wireless communication by transmitting signals from several antennas at once. The enormous gains in data rate of using many antennas simultaneously are only now being fully appreciated.

ST:  Does it describe a new discovery or a new methodology that's useful to others?

The method is useful since it provides a systematic way for designing the signals, no matter what antenna configuration you have in mind.

ST:  Could you summarize the significance of your paper in layman's terms?

If you wish to increase the data rate of your wireless system using multiple antennas, our method helps you design your signals.

ST:  How did you become involved in this research?

Bell Laboratories has a long and rich history of innovation in wireless communications and has a group of scientists and engineers working with multiple antennas. I was fortunate to join this group.End
