ST:  Why do you think your paper is highly cited?

It is highly cited because it deals with a major human pathogen, a widely used class of drugs, and reports new mechanisms of resistance that complicate detection and interpretation of in vitro susceptibility tests.

ST:  Does it describe a new discovery or new methodology that's useful to others?

Our paper describes a new discovery. However, are not all scientific manuscripts supposed to report new findings?

ST:  What was the circumstance that led you to do this research?

It was the observation of a new resistance phenotype.

ST:  Could you summarize the significance of your paper in layman's terms?

Clinical isolates of pneumococci that displayed unusual resistance to erythromycin and derivative antibiotics were shown to have ribrosome alterations following chromosomal mutations.End
