Featuring: The Osteoporosis and Arthritis Research Group (OARG) at the University of California San Francisco

The Osteoporosis and Arthritis Research Group (OARG) at the University of California San Francisco includes some of the world's top researchers in medicine, engineering, physics, computer science, biology, and epidemiology. OARG members are recognized internationally as experts in their fields and are invited to lecture frequently.

The University of California San Francisco ranked #1 for citations, #1 for papers, and #10 for cites per paper in institutions for the special topic of Osteoporosis and is listed in 6 of the 25 top papers for Osteoporosis.

Researchers at the OARG work with diverse approaches to the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, arthritis, and related disorders. We have conducted numerous single-center studies as well as large, multi-center clinical trials examining the effects of diet and exercise on bone density and the effects of pharmacological agents on both bone density and fracture risk. The OARG has advised agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Osteoporosis Foundation on issues related to bone density testing and certification of densitometry technologists. We also work with the private sector to develop new densitometry and ultrasound equipment and routinely partner with pharmaceutical companies to test the safety and efficacy of new drug treatments. The technological sophistication of the bone imaging techniques employed by the OARG, coupled with extensive experience in managing clinical trials, puts the OARG in a very strong position to evaluate new treatment strategies.

Osteoporosis

The OARG researches the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and musculoskeletal disorders using the most advanced technological tools available. OARG researchers work with a wide variety of bone densitometry equipment, including dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), quantitative computed tomography (QCT), quantitative ultrasound (QUS), and high resolution radiographic digitization. OARG is often the first to obtain new prototypes from major manufacturers and works closely with equipment manufacturers on the design and development of these devices, as well testing their clinical efficacy. The OARG is a valued resource for government, industry and professional societies involved in osteoporosis and densitometry. The State of California, Health Care Finance Administration (HCFA), the American College of Radiology, the American Society of Radiologic Technologists, the National Osteoporosis Foundation, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have consulted the OARG when developing guidelines for the proper use of densitometry equipment, the creation of standards for the certification of densitometry technologists, and reimbursement policies for bone mineral density tests.

The OARG works with the private sector to provide advice and assistance on the development of new densitometry and ultrasound equipment. The OARG has evaluated bone densitometry and ultrasound equipment as part of the FDA pre-market approval requirements. End
